the phenomenon that has long broken the boundaries of theater and it is welcomed as if it were a rock concert

Cristian Ceresoli is a writer, born in Bergamo in 1975. His debut writing is La Merda (2012). The “extraordinary, brutal, disturbing and human” (The Times) text on the human condition earned him the Fringe First Award for Writing Excellence (first Italian ever), the Arches Brick Award for Emerging Art and a nomination for the Total Theater Award for Innovation at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2012. In Italy, among others, the Critics Award.

La Merda, originally written in Italian, is translated, published or staged around the world in numerous other languages, including English, Greek, Danish, Czech, Spanish, Galician, Portuguese, French, German, Swedish, Norwegian and being translated into other languages. The work is published in a bilingual edition by the English publisher Oberon Books in 2012 and in 2017 in Italy by Gallucci HD.

La Merda manifests as a stream of consciousness where, in poetry, the bulimic and revolting public confidence of a “young” ugly woman who tries with obstinacy, resistance and courage to break through the society of the Thighs and Freedoms is unleashed.

The original production, performed in English or Italian by The Stage Award Winning actress Silvia Gallerano, has enjoyed great success with audiences and critics all over the world (from Europe to Brazil, from Australia to North America). Eight years after his debut, the phenomenon that has long broken the boundaries of theater and it is welcomed as if it were a rock concert, continues its live tour, recording sold out both in large cities and in the remote suburbs and provinces.

The Brazilian production (A Merda) interpreted by Christiane Tricerri, as well as the Danish production (Lort) interpreted by Danica Curcic and the Norwegian one (Dritt) with Helga Guren, make a long tour studded with sold out and prestigious national awards.

In 2009 he wrote a sung opera, with original music, dedicated to the Gospels inlaid to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, entitled La Dolorosa (2009). On commission of the Arena di Verona, he writes the opera libretto Othello Sex Machine (2013).

In 2019 the debut in Denmark and Italy, in 2020 in Norway, of his new writing a lysergic and psychedelic play entitled Happy Hour (2019). The “desperate, chilling, fierce and poetic” (The Scotsman) work was composed starting from 2007, as if it were the second fragment of the same landscape, as if (with La Merda) the two works illuminated parts of the same painting. Happy Hour has been nominated at Copenhagen Culture as Best New Play

It is a score (or city) where amusing mass deportations occur, in which the most colorful of fascisms is affirmed. A poem of tendency to the overwhelming rhythm of an uninterrupted and daily happy hour, in a delirious renewal of the language, crossed by a humanity that enjoys life, gheparded clothing and is willing to do anything to defend their enthusiasm.

The Italian production with Silvia Gallerano & Stefano Cenci and the Danish production with Özlem SaglanmakAsbjorn Krogh Nissen are both directed by Simon Boberg, an internationally renowned Danish director, formerly director of the theatrical and television production of Lort (La Merda) in Denmark. The Norwegian production with Helga Guren & Karl Vidar directed by Audny Chris Holsen makes its debut in September 2020.

Ceresoli is now writing his first film Home Video Memories that will be directed by acclaimed cinema director Roberta Torre (starring Silvia Gallerano) and his first tv series The Butterflies with acclaimed Irish tv director Conor Morrissey (EastEnders).

From 2013 he collaborates with the Olivier, TONY and EMMY Award-winning producer Richard Jordan Productions.

‘Extraordinary, uncompromising and entirely unforgettable. Rich, absorbing worlds that suck you in and shake you up, leaving you disorientated, disturbed and exhilarated’

★★★★ The Times (UK)

‘Um ato de revolta e libertade. Na sua ira discursiva, com verdades e delírio, o que surge é o ser humano entrevisto e retratado na alta literatura’

Estadão (Brazil)

‘Extraordinary, terrifying and hard to taste, hard to ignore. A piece so literally and metaphorically naked, raw and angry that you leave the theatre feeling as if you’ve had all your skin scraped off’

★★★★ The Guardian (UK)

‘Gallerano’s visceral performance will stay with you for years’

★★★★★ The Stage (UK)

‘Think Beckett on steroids. A furious stream-of-consciousness.’

The Georgia Straight (Canada)

‘Devastating stream of consciousness. One of the most wonderfully full–on performance ever seen’

★★★★ The Scotsman (UK)

‘È come entrare in un circo. La belva pronta, sul trampolo. Guarda, annuisce, ruggisce.

‘It is anti fascist as well as anti abuse; against people who play for power over others. Parts of this show are so politically incorrect that they come at you from unexpected angles. Certainly the whole piece is pushing boundaries of theatre in new ways.’

The Advertiser / La Merda is Pushing Boundaries of Theatre in New Ways

by Tim Lloyd, The Advertiser, 7 March 2015

★★★★★ Adelaide Festival of Arts

Raging against a world of bad experiences

It is anti fascist as well as anti abuse; against people who play for power over others.

Certainly the whole piece is pushing boundaries of theatre in new ways.

Silvia Gallerano is stark naked, sitting on an oversized stool to make her look smaller.

She is worried. She thinks she is too small and her thighs are too large, but as this show proceeds we realise that her insecurity is much greater than that, and it comes from a world of bad experiences that afflict women in particular.

She speaks in a wavering, downtrodden loser’s voice with that brittle, bright laughter and studied gaiety that creates a theatre of unease.

We learn things about her in small grabs fitted among her bright chatter about auditions, diets, and torturous treatments for those thighs; we learn about contemplations of suicide, devastating experiences, and about all La Merda that she has to eat.

Then we experience a supremacist rage, pent up and blowing out of her in a shocking, full-voiced crescendo. And not once but again and again as we see where the poison of her experiences has spread.

Cristian Ceresoli’s three part monologue is the view from the inside about how corrupting an individual’s trust in image, power and politics can be.

It is anti fascist as well as anti abuse; against people who play for power over others.

One of the saddest scenes is a playground tryst between her, aged 13, and a disabled boy who has recognised in her someone he can mould to his sexual need.

Like that, parts of this show are so politically incorrect that they come at you from unexpected angles. Certainly the whole piece is pushing boundaries of theatre in new ways.

To take us on this journey Gallerano has little more than a large mouth gashed with bright red lipstick and microphone technique, and she uses each with devastating effect.

Her cavilling, plaintive voice disguises an assemblage of voices and vocalisations that can make you shrink back into your seat.

La Merda, a hit in the Edinburgh Fringe in 2012, is quite rightfully Festival fare.
