the phenomenon that has long broken the boundaries of theater and it is welcomed as if it were a rock concert

Cristian Ceresoli is a writer, born in the remote province of Bergamo in 1975. His debut writing is La Merda (2012). The “extraordinary, brutal, disturbing and human” (The Times) text on the human condition earned him the Fringe First Award for Writing Excellence (first Italian ever), the Arches Brick Award for Emerging Art and a nomination for the Total Theater Award for Innovation at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2012. In Italy, among others, the Critics AwardLa Merda, originally written in Italian, is translated, published or produced and staged around the world in numerous other languages, including English, Greek, Danish, Czech, Spanish, Galician, Portuguese, French, German, Swedish, Norwegian and being translated into other languages. The work is published in a bilingual edition by the English publisher Bloomsbury and in Italy by GallucciThe original production, performed in English or Italian by The Stage Award Winning actress Silvia Gallerano, has enjoyed great success with audiences and critics all over the world (from Europe to Brazil, from Australia to North America). Eight years after his debut, the phenomenon that has long broken the boundaries of theater and it is welcomed as if it were a rock concert, continues its live tour, recording sold out both in large cities and in the remote suburbs and provinces.

Ceresoli is finishing writing a book (a quite funny book) on the failure of the male (and the male system) and on his recent experience among pills and depression. It is the story of a rock band and a terrorist attack on Monday, at the zoo. But above all, it is the book that demonstrates his total inability to write a book. It is called Masturbazione (Masturbation) and, from Spring 2024, it is presented to the public in episodes or chapters, with live readings, performed by a choir of males. Then, once he’s finished writing, it will be published by a publishing house, word by word, from beginning to the end (of world). La Dolorosa is his new work and production, a rebellious long song, performed in concert both in Italian and Spanish that will debut in Italy for Christmas 2025 eventually touring in South America in 2026/27. Happy Hour (2019) is a play that was produced in Denmark and Italy and toured in Europe. He wrote Le Favolose, a film directed by Roberta Torre and presented at the Venice Film Festival #79. For the Swiss Radio Television he wrote and created with Silvia Gallerano a radio score (or podcast) entitled Arrampicarsi, which is the first draft for the new international opera, a multiverse solo musical performed by Gallerano and at the moment entitled title not found or rebel lyrics. From 2013 he collaborates with the Olivier, TONY and EMMY Award-winning producer Richard Jordan Productions.

International Press on La Merda

‘Una obra sublime tan brutal.’

El País (Spain)

‘Extraordinary, uncompromising and entirely unforgettable. Rich, absorbing worlds that suck you in and shake you up, leaving you disorientated, disturbed and exhilarated’

★★★★ The Times (UK)

‘Extraordinary, terrifying and hard to taste, hard to ignore. A piece so literally and metaphorically naked, raw and angry that you leave the theatre feeling as if you’ve had all your skin scraped off’

★★★★ The Guardian (UK)

‘Gallerano’s visceral performance will stay with you for years’

★★★★★ The Stage (UK)

‘Think Beckett on steroids. A furious stream-of-consciousness.’

The Georgia Straight (Canada)

‘Devastating stream of consciousness. One of the most wonderfully full–on performance ever seen’

★★★★ The Scotsman (UK)

‘È come entrare in un circo. La belva pronta, sul trampolo. Guarda, annuisce, ruggisce.

‘It is anti fascist as well as anti abuse; against people who play for power over others. Parts of this show are so politically incorrect that they come at you from unexpected angles. Certainly the whole piece is pushing boundaries of theatre in new ways.’

The Advertiser (Australia)

‘How a culture of celebrity feeds a returning tide of European neo-Nazism’

ABC (Australia)

‘Teater, der virkelig vil os noget’

★★★★★ Politiken (Denmark)

Utterly compelling verbal symphony. Somewhat perversely, the compelling honesty

of what follows is simply irresistible’

★★★★ The Herald (UK)

‘Il monologo rivoluzionario.’

Il Sole 24 Ore (Italy)

‘Una voce s’è desta. Un grido di dolore. Uno stimolo a liberare il nostro paese.’

‘This is skin in the tradition of Artaud and it is powerful, political & poetic.’

★★★★★ Examiner (USA)

‘A manifest of anger and tenderness, a stand-up tragedija’

Ore (Lithuania)

★★★★★ GregersDH (Denmark)

‘Desperate and chilling, a fierce commentary on a society spinning helplessly towards barbarism; it blazes with the kind of poetic and theatrical energy that leaves audiences not depressed, but exhilarated and empowered.’

★★★★ The Scotsman (UK)

‘A play that surprises like surrealism and sounds like a symphony,

angry, passionate and compelling.’

Total Theatre (UK)

’An incredibly acted, grotesquely comedic and brutal journey

through a fascist, totalitarian landscape.’

★★★★ The Wee Review (UK)

‘A larger than life performance’

Butaca En Anfiteatro / La Merda, o un Grito Liberador

‘La Merda’, o un grito liberador

de Hugo Álvarezy Domìnguez, Butaca En Anfiteatro, 24 Julio 2015

★★★★★  MIT de Ribadavia, Auditorio do Castelo
